This educational activity will focus on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women, examining which types of CVD are more prevalent in women, traditional and non-traditional risk factors, and atypical symptoms and clinical presentations which can present challenges in proper diagnosis. Sex-specific differences which impact recognition and proper diagnosis will be explained, and the latest evidence and clinical recommendations for managing female patients with CVD will be reviewed and discussed. The importance of disparities in care in underrepresented populations particularly relating to maternal morbidity will also be discussed.

The course will also cover the role of nuclear imaging in the assessment of ischemia and microvascular disease, and the role of cardiac imaging for CV risk assessment in liver, renal, and heart transplant patients.

This educational activity will target physicians (general cardiologists, nuclear cardiologists, primary care, transplant) and transplant surgeons.

After participating in this activity, learners should be able to achieve the following:
• Describe sex-specific differences in the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease and in the manifestation of ischemic
heart disease in women
• Discuss the relationship between maternal mortality and cardiovascular outcomes
• Review the pathophysiology and diagnostic strategy for women with coronary microvascular disease
• Evaluate the causes and impact of ethnic disparities on maternal mobility and mortality in women
• Explain how novel imaging and invasive techniques are used for evaluating heart disease in women
• Describe the role of cardiac imaging in risk assessment of liver, renal, and heart transplant patients

By addressing knowledge and competence gaps, the goal of this course is to improve diagnostic skills and strategy for guiding treatment decisions in the management of CAD in women, improve knowledge and understanding of sex specific differences in the pathophysiology of CAD and in the manifestation of ischemic heart disease in women; improve knowledge and understanding the role of nuclear imaging in the assessment of ischemia and microvascular disease; improve the role of cardiac imaging in the CV risk assessment in liver, renal, and heart transplant patients; improve patient quality of life and outcomes.
