Course Overview
This is a self-assessment CME activity in online format consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. Each question includes an answer rationale and references for further studying. This module is updated every 3 years. It is designed for practitioners who are performing nuclear imaging studies and want to increase their competence for certification, recertification or general practice improvement. This Part 1 module will focus on high-risk features, image interpretation and heart failure.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for nuclear cardiology physicians.
Learner Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Explain high-risk features on stress testing with myocardial perfusion imaging
- Recognize artifacts and incidental findings on myocardial perfusion imaging
- Identify the role of nuclear cardiac imaging in patients with heart failure
- Explain the value and limitations of myocardial perfusion imaging in patients presenting with acute chest pain
- Identify the role of myocardial perfusion imaging in stable ischemic heart disease
Overall Goal
The overall goal of this module is to increase learners’ knowledge and competence in their ability to improve cardiovascular outcomes.
Statement of Need
An estimated 80 Million American adults (approximately 1 in 3) have 1 or more types of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with over 30 Million estimated to be under 60 years of age. According to the Centers for Disease Control “Heart Disease Fact Sheet”, in 2006 heart disease was the leading cause of death for both men and women and a total of 26%—or more than one in every four—of all deaths were caused by heart disease. Further, in the United States, one person has a heart attack every 34 seconds and one person dies from a heart disease-related event every minute.
